Collisional Dust Avalanches in Debris Discs

چکیده

We quantitatively investigate how collisional avalanches may develop in debris discs, as the result of the initial break-up of a planetesimal or comet-like object, triggering a collisional chain reaction due to outward escaping small dust grains. We use a specifically developed numerical code that follows both the spatial distribution of the dust grains and the evolution of their size-frequency distribution due to collisions. We investigate how strongly avalanche propagation depends on different parameters (e.g amount of dust released in the initial break-up, collisional properties of dust grains and their distribution in the disc). Our simulations show that avalanches evolve on timescales of ∼1000 years, propagating outwards following a spiral-like pattern, and that their amplitude exponentially depends on the number density of dust grains in the system. We estimate a probability for witnessing an avalanche event as a function of disc densities, for a gas-free case around an A-type star, and find that features created by avalanche propagation can lead to observable asymmetries for dusty systems with a β Pictoris-like dust content or higher. Characteristic observable features include: (i) a brightness asymmetry of the two sides for a disc viewed edge-on, (ii) a one-armed open spiral or a lumpy structure in the case of face-on orientation. A possible system in which avalanche-induced structures might have been observed is the edge-on seen debris disc around HD32297, which displays a strong luminosity difference between its two sides.

Collisional processes and size distribution in spatially extended debris discs

Context. New generations of instruments provide, or are about to provide, pan-chromatic images of debris discs and photometric measurements , that requires new generations of models, to in particular account for their collisional activity. Aims. We present a new multi–annulus code for the study of collisionally evolving extended debris discs. We first wish to confirm and extend our early result...

Analysis of the Herschel DEBRIS Sun-like star sample

This paper presents a study of circumstellar debris around Sun-like stars using data from the Herschel DEBRIS Key Programme. DEBRIS is an unbiased survey comprising the nearest ∼90 stars of each spectral type A-M. Analysis of the 275 F-K stars shows that excess emission from a debris disc was detected around 47 stars, giving a detection rate of 17.1+2.6 −2.3 per cent, with lower rates for later...

Millimetre observations of Pleiades stars: a lack of solar-analogue planetesimal discs at 100 Myr?

Solar analogues approximately 100 Myr old may have dusty debris from collisions within evolving cometary belts, and such remnant discs might also be associated with earlier stellarspin braking. We observed at 1.2 mm wavelength a sample of 17 fast and slow rotators, mostly single K dwarfs, in the 100 Myr Pleiades cluster. No dust was detected for individual stars or the ensemble, so there are no...

Dust-Dust Collisional Charging and Lightning in Protoplanetary Discs

We study the role of dust-dust collisional charging in protoplanetary discs. We show that dust-dust collisional charging becomes an important process in determining the charge state of dust and gas, if there is dust enhancement and/or dust is fluffy, so that dust surface area per disc volume is locally increased. We solve the charge equilibrium equations for various disc environments and dust c...

Metallicity of solar-type stars with debris discs and planets

Context. Around 16% of the solar-like stars in our neighbourhood show IR-excesses due to dusty debris discs and a fraction of them are known to host planets. Determining whether these stars follow any special trend in their properties is important to understand debris disc and planet formation. Aims. We aim to determine in a homogeneous way the metallicity of a sample of stars with known debris...
